Masso Answers; I can't claim that yoga is  a primary weight reduction programme . However it can substantially help via its empowering disciplines and life style change factors.

Most experts agree that the weight management is more mental rather than just a physical practice. Most people who loose weight gain it right back if a fundamental life style change is not initiated.

A life style change can be most effective and yoga can be that fundamental change.
I have witnessed practitioners start loosing or gaining desired weight right after they begin doing yoga, specially when they practice supported yoga. It maybe because yoga brings awareness to body and physical shape, encourages better eating habits, changes the way we think and observe ourselves. Some yoga moves can reflect the difficulties that a heavier or lighter body form can contribute to. Additionally yoga adds tone to body, increasing appreciation to form and weight porportion. Definitely a body shaping and empowering practice that can make weight management  regiments enduring and most likely easier.

We can't claim the weight managment qualities of the Yoga practice because the main purpose of practice collectively is much more than that. Lets say that Yoga does more than wieght managment, it is a whole healthy life style for as long as we practice and beyond.
